My "Thanksgiving" Weekend Away

You've read the title and are thinking that I went a short trip outside of my hometown for a wee break. You'd be mostly right, I did go away for a wee break, three days to be exact. But my trip was anything but short.

I travelled with my mother and father to Orlando, Florida. Right now you're probably thinking I'm crazy to go to such a place for just the weekend and maybe I am.

You're not the only one who would think that. I would know, I've witnessed people's disbelief first hand. The thing that most people don't understand is why would I go just for the weekend.

The answer is why not?! I'm not bragging in anyway when I say this but if you were offered an all expenses paid trip abroad you'd be silly not to jump at the chance.

I enjoy the simple things in life don't get me wrong. But is it really so wrong to enjoy the luxuries too?

The main reason for my trip was for a break from college. Just for the weekend I wasn't dreading the work and assignments that are soon approaching. I lost myself in the moment, by doing an activity I love most. Shopping.

I'm the first to admit that I'm a shopaholic but knowing that I wil be visiting the USA every four months. I am refraining from shopping in the UK for thing that I can get cheaper over there.

Again your thinking that paying for a flight andaccommodation etc. is expensive so it doesn't make a difference. But I disagree, if you shop SMART you can get make up the difference. And by that I mean finding some mega bargains at outlet malls. Orlando has quite the selection to pick from.

However, timing is everything when it comes to shopping in the states. The best time to hit the outlets is when there are national holidays. For instance, Fourth of July weekend, labour day weekend and the best of all Black Friday (thanksgiving weekend).

To help you out I will spill my secrets on how to prepare yourself for a shopping trip

Number one: have a good rest before you set out on your hunt.

2) Create a list of places where you know you specifically want to visit.

3) Research places to go, address and distance to and back from your base camp.

4) Go early to a avoid the rush hour, you will have ample time to scour the rails/ shelves for what you want.

5) Be patient and courteous to the people around you, we are civilised beings.

6) Take note of where bathrooms are, when you have the opportunity to go, go.

And lastly a word of advice to save yourself money.

Don't get carried away.
Don't buy for the sake of buying.
Read the small print on promotions, if you're unsure price check.
Try before you buy as in most stores the sizes of clothing can vary.
If you can't picture yourself wearing/using what your wanting to buy in your mind then put it back. It's not worth your hard earned cash. That doesn't mean you can't treat yourself now and then.

Information overload for your brain but my main message is to enjoy yourself just try not to get too carried away and put yourself off shopping forever.

It's a way of life and until there's a zombie apocalypse or something else that stops civilisation in it's tracks, it's not likely to change.

Until next time,

Lisa

Sleeping with Sirens Fan Complied Biography (Sources named)

Source: http://site.sleepingwithsirens.net/photos/
One of my all time bands is Sleeping With Sirens (depicted at the left) as part of my college course I was tasked to compile a biography for them. It turns out what I've written is too long but I didn't want half of my work to go to waste.

So here it is, I applaud you if you read to the very end as it is quite a read. If you don't you should still check them out on ALL their social media and YouTube. They are going on tour soon so go grab yourself some tickets too!!

Sleeping with Sirens (SWS) is an American rock band from Orlando, Florida currently residing in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The group is primarily known for the versatility of lead vocalist’s, Kellin Quinn, tenor leggiero vocal range; this allows them to have a fluid music genre of pop rock, alternative rock and post – hardcore.

Guitarists Jack Fowler and Nick Martin, bassist Justin Hill and drummer Gabe Barham forge a vibrant collage via instrumental backdrop; always in service to the song and the powerful audience connection their songs create.

Quinn’s angelic voice and the easy-going affability of all five guys endears them to a diverse audience, people more friends than fans in a sense. People who connect with the singer’s personal tales of childhood woe (“Free Now,” “Trophy Father Trophy Son”), tender love letters (“If I’m James Dean, You’re Audrey Hepburn”), and direct encouragements to seize the day (“Scene Two – Roger Rabbit”) and triumph over heartache (“Feel”) and pushback against the hater brigades (“Congratulations”).

SWS were signed to Rise records from 2009 until 2014 when they changed label’s to Epitaph. Since then they have released their fourth full-length album Madness in 2015. They are currently on track to set off on their Madness world tour. Acts that have collaborated with the band are Pierce the Veil, Machine Gun Kelly, Matty Mullins from Memphis May Fire and We Are Defiance.

The band has sold over 720,000 albums across their catalogue, but their earliest beginnings are vividly relatable to anyone who has been in a band. Quinn joined an early incarnation of the group even as its line-up was disintegrating. Barham and Hills were working restaurant jobs in their native Midwest when Quinn, who they had played with in bands before, asked them to join Sleeping With Sirens. They sold everything, strapped Hill’s bass cab on the top of a car and headed South with nowhere to live and no real plan. The three of them made SWS debut album together, which was released on 23rd of March 2010. It debuted at number 7 on Billboard‍ 's Top Heatseekers chart, and at number 36 on Top Independent Albums.

With Ears to See and Eyes to Hear featured the old line-up’s guitarists, but Jack Fowler and Jesse Lawson were on-board in time for Let’s Cheers to This, which shook the scene in 2011. The 7th of April 2011 was the release of their first single off the new album, ‘Do It Now Remember It Later’. Later in the month on 28th, the next single "Fire" was released.

The first two albums and relentless touring resulted in a solid profile as a top-tier band in the worlds of screamo and metalcore, but SWS had bigger aspirations. The subtle, down-to-earth acoustic performances they’d quietly assemble outside of clubs after their set started to draw more people outside than whoever was headlining inside.

The intimate, communal vibe of these interactions with fans and the exploration of bigger melodic hooks led to the acoustic EP, ‘If You Were A Movie, This Would Be Your Soundtrack’ released on 26th of June 2012. The album debuted at no. 17 on the Billboard Top 200 charts, selling 17,486 in the first week. As a Halloween special the band released a new single called "Dead Walker Texas Ranger" which was recommended for use on a movie sound track by a very popular online blog with a sizeable following.

In January 2013, the band entered the studio to record their follow up album to ‘Let's Cheers to This’ with an estimated release date of mid-2013. The group’s newfound comfort in their embrace of giant melodies was apparent with the massive crowd pleaser, ‘Feel’, which demonstrated a wide range, from debut single “Low”. The album debuted at number three on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart.

A few years earlier, SWS was an opening band. In 2013, they sold out a 5,000 capacity club in London. In support of the new album, the band played Kia main stage at the Vans Warped Tour 2013. They released the second single from ‘Feel’ was "Alone" featuring Machine Gun Kelly on the 21st of May.

Wins and nominations for Artist Of The Year (APMAS 2014, Alternative Press 2013), Best International Newcomer (Kerrang!), Album Of The Year and Song Of The Year (APMAS) are all emblematic of the groundswell SWS built at what feels like a lightning pace. Facebook likes tripled to over 3 million since 2013; each of Quinn’s social media profiles has 1 million followers; Alternative Press, Rock Sound, Kerrang!, Outburn and Blunt regularly feature them on the cover; they’ve been a main-stage act for Vans Warped Tour and UK’s prestigious Reading & Leeds.

On the 16th of October, guitarist Jesse Lawson announced his departure from the band, citing his desire to spend more time with his family and start a new musical venture.  The Feel This Tour (SWS, Memphis May Fire, Breathe Carolina, Issues, Our Last Night) introduced Nick Martin to the fans. Martin’s tenure in Underminded and post-hardcore super-group D.R.U.G.S. lends sharp experience to the raw energy already present in SWS, resulting in the most potent incarnation of the band yet.

On the 6th of July, 2014 the band released pictures of them in the studio recording new music with John Feldmann; who has worked with acts such as: Good Charlotte, The Used, Cute is What We Aim For, Circa Survive’s Anthony Green, Saosin, Four Year Strong, Plain White T’s, Panic! at the Disco, Neon Trees, All Time Low, Escape the Fate etc.

Quinn’s “King For A Day” collaboration with Pierce The Veil was certified gold. This prompted the band to announce they would be headlining a world tour alongside Pierce the Veil, with supporting acts Beartooth and This Wild Life.

In August of 2014, the band stated they were parting ways with Rise Records and working on as an independent band. However, on the 10th of November 2014 it was announced on Alternative Press that the band signed to Epitaph Records and released a new single called "Kick Me". The band followed the release of "Kick Me", with their single "We Like It Loud", on New Year's Day. It was available for free download for 24 hours through the band's website.

Falling on the more melodic side of the post-hardcore world, Sleeping with Sirens create a whirlwind of emotion with their yearning and aggressive blend of metal and emo influences. They have taken to referring to themselves and their fellow outsiders as Strays, a concept immortalized in the song of the same name on the band’s Epitaph debut. Madness is an electric celebration of all that is SWS and everything they represent. It’s a reminder and an exclamation point as to exactly why so many consider this band to be the voice of their generation, a hilarious happenstance considering SWS humility and humble beginnings.

No matter how large Sleeping With Sirens has become, Quinn and his cohorts haven’t backed down from their offering of only the most courageous examinations of what they are as people, expressed nightly on stages around the world through marvellously intimate songs.

Why You Should Love Witches, Like I!

Just recently I have caught up to date with the Lifetime series "Witches of East End" first aired in 2013. I have to say that I enjoyed watching both season one and two. However when I heard that there was going to be a break in the production of the third season, I was disappointed.

It's not the first time a TV series based on witches has been dropped due to low ratings. I am referring to is the CW's production of the "The Secret Circle" first aired in 2011 based on the book series by worldwide best seller L.J Smith. Another TV series that I was sad to see go not only had I watched every episode but I had also read the books previously. As usual they were not exact with the storyline and CW had produced their own take on it. Surprisingly, the major differences between the book and the TV show did not disappoint; I felt like it was very well produced. Therefore it was prime viewing and a good TV show in its own right. However the vast differences, may be one of the reasons why fans of the book were not fans of the TV show which resulted in low ratings and the show being cut. Again another witch TV show with so much potential cut from our screens.

To this day I still don't understand why people haven't jumped on the I enjoyed both series. The film industry seems to cope slightly better when it comes to witch themes.

My top five must see witch films are:
  1. "The Witches" 1990, starring Anjelica Huston, Jason Fisher and Mia Zetterling.
  2. "Hocus Pocus" 1993, starring Bette Midler and Sarah Jessica Parker.
  3. "Double, Double Toil and Trouble" 1993, starring the Olsen twins.
  4.  "The Craft" 1996, starring Robin Tunney, Neve Campbell, Fairuza Balk and Rachel True.
  5. "Practical Magic" 1998, starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman.
The above list are films that I've grown up with on the tv screen every Halloween i would watch them all without fail. Nowadays there aren't many witch themed films, at most there is one released a year and if it fails to impress me it's like it wasn't released at all. The most recent film that I wouldn't hesitate to watch again is "Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters" (2013). I enjoyed how the director took a creative spin on the Grimm brothers fairytale, in turn making it different from others.

This years witch movie release is called "The Last Witch Hunter" starring Vin Deisel, Rose Leslie and Elijah Wood. From the look of the trailer it seems promising and it hasn't been released in the UK as of yet, I don't think. When I do get the chance to watch it for myself I will report back and let you know my thoughts compared to other reviews slating it.

Until next time,
Lisa.

Gone With The Wind?!

             Film Review

Recently I decided I would catch up on my classic film knowledge.
My choice was "Gone With The Wind" (1939) as it was available to me.
Prior to my watching of this movie I had no idea what it was about, I had
only ever know the iconic line of Rhett Butler played by Clark Gable (the man on the poster >>)"Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn". For some unknown reason I assumed that this line would be used in a romantic situation. Boy was I wrong!

Nevertheless, there was no problem with me not knowing anything about the storyline of this film or the issues it dealt with. The film is set in  Southern America around the time of the civil war and focuses on the life of a manipulative "Southern belle" by the name of Scarlett O'Hara (O'Hara is her maiden name as during the course of the film she marries three times).

I found the film entertaining to a certain degree. I say this because the running length of the film is FOUR hours compared to the standard running length nowadays. As well as the ending, I am personally the happy ending type of girl and this film left me disappointed in some ways. I understand that this film's main point is about the emotional journey that Scarlett goes on to protect her families land and reputation during a time of war. However there was a part of me hoping that she would finally settle down with Rhett and live happily ever after all the while leaving her troubles and the past behind.
This ideal of mine did not happen that's for sure.

If I were to rate "Gone With The Wind" directed by Victor Fleming out of ten, I would give it a 7 out of 10. It would have been an 8 but it lost a point because of the length and my dissatisfaction with the ending and Scarlett as a character (Not Vivien Leigh who portrayed her very well).

Until next time,
Lisa
